Conference Books — Spring 2010

This is my fifth compilation of the books and other media mentioned or referenced each General Conference. And this time I discovered something I didn’t expect, although it makes sense: Even General Authorities cite Wikipedia.

It’s possible that this has happened before and I’ve simply missed it. Or, if I haven’t, then perhaps this is the first time. The reference is found in Elder D. Todd Christofferson’s talk The Blessing of Scripture. In it, one of the citations for information on William Tyndale is the Wikipedia article on Tyndale (see the last item in the bibliography below. I’m sure that General Authorities have cited the LDS Internet sites before. This is the first I’ve noticed a citation to the rest of the Internet.

Other than that, this conference simply had fewer references to outside sources than last Fall, apparently because fewer periodicals were referenced. In the Fall, Conference talks cited a total of 19 different periodical articles. This conference there were 4. That accounts for most of the drop from 45 items cited last Fall to 33 this conference.

Anyway, here are the books and other outside sources mentioned or citied in the most recent General Conference:

  1. I always enjoy this post, Kent. Thanks!

I must admit that I’m a little bit pleased that Elder Oaks cites an article from the New Yorker — I have complained in the past about the magazine’s penchant for adultery fiction, but on the whole, like many graduates in the humanities, I’m a sucker for well-written long form reporting and any magazine that actually still publishes short fiction and poetry. And one of these weeks I will win the cartoon caption contest.

  2. .

I don’t have any comments this time, but I still find this a helpful resource and I hope you keep doing it.

  3. I must admit, Th, that I expected more comments than I got. But I suppose when you provide a reference list, there isn’t as much to comment on.

  4. .

Unless something really strikes me as startling, I probably won’t have anything to say. The closest I had to a comment was more or less what Wm said about the New Yorker.

  5. Not really. Anymore it is pretty main stream for use as a general reference, despite its obvious limitations.
